THE future looks bright for the Aboitiz Football Cup, the premier football tournament in Cebu.
Aside from a bigger and better 19th edition that kicks off next month, the Aboitiz Football Cup also looks to branch out to Luzon and possibly go national.
“We envision to bring the Aboitiz Football Cup to the national scene and make it the country’s premier football league,” said AboitizLand manager Eduardo Aboitiz yesterday at the Choobi Choobi Restaurant in The Outlets at Pueblo Verde.
AboitizLand is building a bigger The Outlets in Lipa, Batangas and it will include a football field that can cater to two nine-a-side games simultaneously.
“The Outlets will open in Lipa in 2018 and it can host games for the Aboitiz Football Cup,” said Joey Zamora of AboitizLand. “There is no formal thing yet but because of logistics it could be a separate tournament and maybe we can play a championship meet-up. But everything is still on the drawing board.”
AboitizLand is also building a football field in Liloan, which could also be used to host Aboitiz Football Cup matches.
“In 2020, but it’s still in the planning stages. We have a plan to build two fields in Liloan, about 112 meters,” said Aboitiz.
The 19th Aboitiz Football Cup formally opens on Sept. 16 at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC), which is one of the highlights in between and after the Philippines Football League (PFL) match between Global Cebu FC and FC Meralco Manila at 4 PM.
“Halftime will be the opening and then after the game, we could have the ceremonial kickoff,” said Cebu Football Association (CFA) board member Glenn Quisido.
This year, the event will still have 18 categories that will be played in four venues– CCSC, Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) and Paref-Springdale.
Right now, around 130 teams have already signed up and it is expected to end up with more teams compared to last year’s 141.
“We promise you a bigger, more wonderful and memorable Aboitiz Cup,” said CFA president Ricky Dakay. “We promise the football community that we won’t disappoint you.” (EKA)
